Going on the size of this box alone you can just imagine how big the trees must have been.

The peaches were white cling stone with amazing flavour. If only they were slip stones they could have been even better. The plums were mostly just eaten with a few stewed.

I got to work on the peaches quickly as they were very ripe. Here is a little of what was made:

What I forgot to photograph were the 'Salads including peach', 'Peach sherbet' and 'Peach chutney'. Not to mention those just eaten.

I am not so sure peaches will grow so well in Sydney but I do have a spot in the garden that might just work, and these peaches were so good I am thinking maybe. If only we didn't get such hot summers and a little more chill in winter. Something I will have to investigate a bit more I am thinking.digging up the dirthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04826367964205052955noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1920804281031615988.post-19094561920390367782014-02-13T11:15:00.000+11:002014-02-13T11:15:00.365+11:00FirstsTime is a sneaky thing it has a way of getting away from you and before you know it you find you have a million things to write about but have forgotten half of them... In fact I look down at the ground to avoid the shame of what is really going on in the garden.

Don't get me wrong it is adequate and the garden looks quite good to those that don't spend as much time in the garden as I do. But see the weeds, lack of food and water as well as quite a few plants in need of haircuts faster than others. In fact I think if I didn't then I might not really be doing such a good job.

But some of the vegies are almost finished such as

Don't you love it when everything you do in a day just becomes magic? As Mr R would say 'it's a peach of a day'.
I have some Tuesdays off and this co-insides with Mr R (he has been working nights lately (4pm-2am) so we don't really see much of each other except on some Tuesdays (date day). So while Mr R slept I thought I could squeeze in a yoga class (and I am soooo glad I did).

Then I decided we should go on a picnic to Bobbin Head (a beautiful national park not to far from me). So what better thing but to take a home grown salad? I walked out and picked zucchini
There are still some problems where the stump of the tree was. As you can see the butter bean (but not the climbing beans right next door) are dying off. In fact one of my jobs this weekend is to pull the last 3 out. I am not sure if it is the soil as it has only affected these beans. I planted some of the same seeds at a client's place and while hers are not thriving (from lack of water I think) they have not died. So I am not sure if I should try again or use something else. It will have to be a legume as I wanted to get some more nitrogen in the soil.

Anyhow looks like I have some work to get on with so best get out there. Hope your weekend is filled with gardening fun.digging up the dirthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04826367964205052955noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1920804281031615988.post-35006963074161176822013-12-01T06:27:00.000+11:002013-12-01T06:27:10.599+11:00Farewell Broadbeans This year I decided to grow both the white and pink flowering broad beans both at home and at my weekly client. My client hadn't seen the pink broad beans and was a little sceptical. But they not only grew better but I think tasted better. I am not sure my client agrees but she was happy to have the beans.

Last week I figured the broad beans had reached the peak and had nothing else to give so with some sadness I harvested them and cleared them out of there frame. While I have put in two more tomatoes I always feel a little sad at how empty the frame (or now empty spot) looks after having something so full growing. But the new plants will hopefully grow to fill the space soon enough. Perhaps I should give them some more compost?
So I decided to chop a pile of fruit for breakfast and though how good blueberries would go. They have quite a good crop which is great considering they were moved into the ground from pots. I was quite concerned about the sandy soils but I am feeding them with 'Kahoona' by the same people who do 'sudden impact for roses'. They seem to supply the correct nutrients for my acid loving blueberries.

Anyway I have managed a couple of bowls of tasty blueberries. And my cousins brought their children over on the weekend and they had quite full bellies after they were shown which berries to pick. SO there has been much love for my beautiful blueberry bushes.
As you can see mangled blueberries. I strong suspect birds. But why couldn't they eat the whole berry rather than going from one berry to the next squishing them? You will notice they haven't touched the non-ripe ones (thankfully). Why did they have to do this to every single ripe berry???
Below I suspect are the culprits
I blame spring madness. The gardens are growing like mad things. I expect it would be even worse if we actually did have some rain. And for those poor people in the blue mountains (and many other places around NSW) in the past few weeks would have done anything for more wet stuff. I am so concerned myself as we are in a bushfire zone as Lane Cove National park is about a kilometre from my patch so this summer brings on a lot of fear.
In the meantime I think I might go off and do a little rain dance.digging up the dirthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04826367964205052955noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1920804281031615988.post-12678640382654767792013-10-10T07:30:00.002+11:002013-10-10T07:30:20.635+11:00Spring madnessI have been away too long I know. But it has been so super busy in the gardening world I haven't had a chance to talk about the changes in my garden. They of course have not been fast changes as I have been tied up with the garden that pay the bills...

Anyway I left you with ground zero I believe. Here is the tree I decided on to replace the liquidambar

She is in flower can I hope for olives this year?

Yes it had to be something that would fruit and enjoy all the sun the front garden is going to throw at it. I grabbed 2 manzanillo and a picual which are both Spanish in origin and pollinate better together. They are quite different in shape so I have the mananillo in one bed and picual in the other. I tried to get a photo to demonstrate this but as they are still quite smallish I just couldn't get one to do it justice. Another time once they have grown a little more.

My biggest concern is of course with the removal of the liquidambar is the nitrogen drawdown in the soil so I have decided to plant vegetables only for a little while rather than putting something new in and it suffering while the old tree breaks down. I expect despite all the blood and bone, cow manure I added to the soil the carbon from the ground down liquidambar stump is not going to be enough. So I will have to use a high nitrogen liquid on the plants.

I did a walk about and look what else is growing in the garden
It was just under 3m from the house walls so we didn't have to ask permission from the council (win). After the tree had dropped it branch two weeks ago I was considered that once in leaf it would really have a sail and land on the neighbours house.

We acted quickly as the tree was still bear so would be a lot easier to remove than it would with leaves on. The tree company we used were outstanding. Six chaps, a crane, a mulcher, a trunk for the trunk, a stump grinder and 3 hrs made very short work of this massive tree.
I have to say I really don't like it gone. The house looks so naked...

But I guess that is the thing with gardens they change so I need to adapt as well. There is a lot of chip that needs removing and soil that needs improving. But I do now have a lot more sun so suddenly I have quite a big space for vegetables and possibly a space for fruit trees. Maybe I could try and compete with Beks 59 apple trees? It might not be so bad after all???

Well I guess I best get my gardening clothes on as there is a whole pile of work that needs doing before I can dream of planting.
For today we had to put our beautiful 7 year old ridge back Diba to sleep. He has be ill for the past week with severe pancreatitis. Today and ultrasound showed up peritonitis, a clot in his spleen and a tumour in his liver. Diagnosis was grim at best so our choice was limited.

He was the best furry friend I ever had.

He was always happy to supervise my work in the garden, dig additional holes in places I did and didn't want. Super keen to take away any excess bone and bone or dynamic lifter from the plants and shrubs about the house.

In winter he was only too happy to do a slow perimeter check around the house: on the sunny spot on the bed, in that patch of light in the spare room or right by the front door soaking up the sun on his sofa.

When someone came to the front they never had to knock as Diba would always announce their arrival.

It was one of the worse choices I had to make.

I am miss him greatly.
The trouble really began back in 1991 when a freak storm hit our area of the North Shore. It was I believe it was a mini cyclone where trees were torn to shreds, roof tile (not hit by trees or debris) were ripped off roofs and the streets were impassable. I suspect it was this storm that may very well have taken the central leader from the liquidambar. Fast forward 22 years, and the weaker of the now multi-stemmed tree just couldn't quite cope with the pressure from the wind.

Looking up at the now badly shaped tree it is clear that no amount of pruning will help. Should another huge wind come while the tree is in leaf I fear the damage will be great.
I told my neighbour it was coming out and figured she would be quite happy about it now she won't have the leaves to deal with. Of course she is also happy to not have the balls to twist here ankles on.

I am really going miss the tree even though it is only 3 meters from the house it gave the best shade over summer and lots of lovely light in winter and stacks of brilliant leaf mulch. The birds will also miss it. Not to mention the possum. Mr R climbed up the other day to remove the possum box thinking he was going to have one quite pissed of poss but he is gone! I am not sure what happened to him, hopefully nothing too awful, perhaps he found himself a new wife and they have set up digs some place else?

So I have been madly creating new shade loving garden beds out the back before spring really hits and to save the tree guys from tip toeing around sensitive plants. I would have liked a lot more compost and manure in the ground but the plants needed moving quickly so lets cross fingers and toes they transplant well. Today I have to move the daphne, gulp. They can't stand root disturbance so it may be the first casualty, wish me luck.
More tomorrow when the tree comes out. Till then I am off to say my last goodbyes
I have even had a number of subjects to write about but you know how it is when you are on holidays. The mind and body relaxes and anything that belongs to routine goes out the window. Needless to say the trip to Europe and the UK were fantastic, great weather, gorgeous friends, lots of laughs and beautiful scenery.

So after nearly 7 weeks it is a bit of a struggle to get back into work. The temperatures are getting warmer and the gardens are putting on growth sot things are starting to show signs of growth (yay).

Last Monday Sydney's North received 40 knot winds. While moving mulch I received a phone call from a neighbour telling me Diba was on her front doorstep. I knew he didn't like wind so I thought he was just in search of someone to protect him (not the bravest of dogs). She walked back with him to see how he escaped and found the top half of our liquidambar over the garden.
We are grateful it only glanced the pergola, missed the roof (although we have been thinking about getting a new roof so insurance money would have been helpful) and missed the power lines. What it didn't miss was my Cercis 'Forest Pansy'

I think there is no coming back for the poor thing that has been growing for 5 years

So now the tree is condemned and needs to come down so I must get back out there and move all the shade loving plants as the front will be quite a different garden without the shade of the tree in summer. I guess I will have to go back to the drawing boards and re design. Hope the weather gods have been kind to you all.digging up the dirthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04826367964205052955noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1920804281031615988.post-54209368878524299732013-07-23T07:55:00.002+10:002013-07-23T07:55:21.671+10:00Kensington Palace GardensWell as there is a new royal born today I thought it might seem time to show some of the photos I took a few weeks back of Kensington Palace gardens. They have use of the spectacular grounds of what once was the country palace to Henry the 8th. The palace and gardens alone are fantastic to look at alone but this date was all about the garden show so another time Henry.

We have been staying in Kent which is about and hour and a half from the show but with a 40 minute delay in traffic we were on the back foot arriving at the hottest time of day. The temperatures were in the 30's (at least 5 degrees hotter than the UK's average hottest days) so there were lots of melting people, gardens and without water it was pretty dusty.

Now onto the show gardens. I liked a bit of each of them and wish we could grow as many of these pretties, but then I expect the English would love to not have to bring agapanthus or citrus inside during winter. I was surprised there were not more gardens growing more vegetables but I didn't get around the entire place. Here are a few highlights.

There is a strong demand to grow food but finding spaces to grow has been a challenge. While there are 737 allotments with a staggering 20 000 plots across London, the waiting list to get in is huge. So as part of the festival of neighbourhoods many window boxes and glass panes have been designed to form very cool sheds.
As usual in a new city I took Mr R off to the botanical gardens. And I was not disappointed as they were really beautiful. Of course I they have 3 glass domes on a smaller scale to the Eden Project inside the settings dry tropical, wet tropical and desert. They had ponds in and above the ground (which I expect must freeze), wild fields and homes for bugs.

A gorgeous friend of ours has a place in the Swiss Alps where we were lucky enough to spend a day mooching about. For a place that is normally covered in snow for a good 6 months of the year it sure does come alive with plants when given the chance. While people don't have big gardens with their homes they do the absolute best to make an impact. With both flowers and vegetables. Come for a walk with me.

There is always someone in a hurry to get from one place to the next. Those who leave it to the last moment in a blind panic that they can't get to the next place because they have to wait to be processed before moving on. Or worse get to the boarding gate to find they missed their flight and then jump up and down creating a scene.

On the other hand there are those who are super early and have the time to sit back to watch the maddening pace around them. There are others who have suddenly so much time and few distractions they can get on and read that book they have put off reading for a long time. Others who find a place to curl up and sleep because no-one gets the opportunity on the plane.

Airports are like a bubble that you are trapped in. Given a glimpse of the outside world through shiny glass. You can't hear the birds, feel the wind on your face or even dig up the dirt! They are sterile and clean, polished and shiny, loud and cavernous but mostly grey!
Of course they are the link to get you to your final destination so worth tolerating for 10 hrs... I think? I like the excitement you feel being at an airport but I think I can wait a while before having to return again. Here is the card I received at my birthday this year.

I have had a Abeka vine going nowhere right at the front for a number of years. Originally there was a fence along the front but it was another one of those things about the house that was falling down so we helped it along and pulled it out.

Quite an old photo but the only one I could find of the fence. The dog looks young and the dead camellia hadn't quite been removed. The Akeba vine is just near the gas box.

Anyway Mr R finally had a bit of time to work on the front entrance at last. However I am not quite sure what to call it. Is it and Arbor or pergola or something else altogether? Although it is not quite finished (we need side bars to grow the climber on) and the pavers need to be re laid. Here is the result.

The dog does like to follow me into the garden and he is now has a little more grey in his face

I think it is a great job he has done. It needs some work but I am chuffed with the structure. I think the gas box has be worked on next.

Now I am off on holidays for a number of weeks so I thought I best take some photos of how the vegie gardens look before I left. Not a lot of produce it has to be said but then I expect it needs a bit more love than I have been able to put in lately.
Neevil arrived about a half hour later and we discussed a dead Tahitian lime that had slowly been dying for a couple of months. Then suddenly I noticed the pear tree lying over the roof of my clients house.

Yes I had been there for about an hour before realising that it was no longer standing. My observation powers were not turned on. Sadly this is one of my clients favourite trees so she was sad to hear about it (she is on holiday so heard from her daughter). This particular pear had large white flowers that were followed by fruit that never developed fully but in the last few years it has been dying back a little at a time.

The pear has been in for at least 35 years (the time my client has lived here). There hasn't really been big wind or even a lot of rain this week but I expect root rot. The wood was a little mushy but I don't expect Phytophthora which has taken a number of trees in this garden as the top of the tree hadn't died off like the others. It is almost like a giant has broken it away from the roots.

Thankfully the damage was quite small 5 tiles were broken and a slightly dented gutter but it missed the windows and there was no great damage to any of the plants under the tree.

I guess it will take us a while to get used to the space that the tree consumed. I guess these are the things we have to accept when gardening that things change sometimes when we really don't want them to.digging up the dirthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04826367964205052955noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1920804281031615988.post-71300965777323943892013-06-03T06:40:00.000+10:002013-06-03T06:40:02.854+10:00Liquidambar

So it was a really hot summer followed by the most amazing autumn. We had almost the entire autumn rain free and temps in the mid 20's. Beautiful to work in but isn't it strange how people think we have had plenty of rain so they don't need to water the garden? Trust me after one week of rain in Feb and nothing again until May makes the place dry. Training my clients is often difficult...

However that aside I wanted to talk about my liquidambar. When I was training in hort I had a teacher who suggested that provided the ground is moist and it gets very cold temperatures at night autumn trees will have amazing colour. This year my grounds went kept constantly moist and I don't think the temps have dropped that much until maybe the last few day (we are now in winter of course). This being said have a look at my liquidambar.
Our liquidambar has been mostly yellow in the past but this year we have been treated to a number of colours. Yellow. orange and reds.
My neighbour is already tired of picking up the leaves out of her garden so thankfully after the rain and wind this weekend she won't have to do it much longer...
Mr R (born in Zimbabwe) has sat for the citizenship exam etc after 10 years he completed the citizen ceremony a few weeks back. If you haven't been to one of these ceremony they are quite sweet. There are songs and talks about what it is like to be an Australian, the pledge, gifts and finally lamingtons :o)
They give out a plant that is endemic to the area that Mr R is holding a Dillwynia floribunda. I hoped for an Angophoria costata but it seems the plants are all shrub like. It is now planted up with some lovely native mix in a decent sized pot and watered in by the rain.
Dilly willy (as I like to call it) is a small to medium shrub that grows to 1.5m bearing yellow pea flowers in spring. I believe it is frost tolerant and doesn't mind lime which is a bit unusual for a native. It also tolerates a bit of shade which is just as well as I have a lots of trees.
They were taking up too much space on the deck. A few of you suggested that now the deck seemed too barren...

You were right and the pots were to good to sit empty. So I took out the chilli's from the garden (which have been taking up the only bit of sun that we get at this time of year) and put them into the blueberry pots. They can grow as big as they like now (I have some spare seeds should they die back over winter). I also cut the raspberry canes back and have a lot of space on the deck.

What do you think now?
